Entomology and Plant Pathology online certificates enhance the credentials of those working in these fields.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Fundamentals of Entomology is a non-degree program offered through the Department of Entomology by distance education, by on-campus regular classroom course enrollment or by a combination of the two. The program is designed to increase personal knowledge about insects, the most diverse group of animals on earth, and their importance to mankind and our environment. It will allow the student to appreciate the role of insect biology and diversity in relation to all forms of animal life.

Curriculum

Required Course:

  • ENT (BIO) 425 General Entomology* (3 hrs; this is the only required course in the certificate; it is offered online)

Elective Courses Available Online: (9 hrs are required)

  • ENT 201 Insects and People (3 hrs)
  • ENT 203 An Introduction to the Honey Bee and Beekeeping (3 hrs)
  • ENT 207 Insects and Human Disease (3 hrs)
  • ENT 401 Honey Bee Biology and Management* (3 hrs)

Admissions Requirements

The certificate is open to all NC State undergraduate degree-seeking students and to those who are enrolled as Non-Degree Studies (NDS) students.

Plan of Study

The Program consists of 12 credit hours of entomology courses of which three hours are required and nine hours are electives.

All courses taken to satisfy the certificate requirements must be completed with a combined GPA of 2.0 or higher. Only courses completed with a grade of “C-” or better will be considered for the certificate.

NDS students may register for a maximum of 6 credit hours per semester. Thus, this certificate may be completed in as little as two semesters.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Plant Pests, Pathogens and People offers an undergraduate course of study built on NC State’s strength in the plant protection disciplines of entomology and plant pathology. These disciplines are critically important to success in agriculture, both traditional crop and livestock operations as well as forest, ornamental and turf landscaping. The certificate will enhance the credentials of professionals working in these industries and also provide a recognized concentration for students pursuing undergraduate degrees in crop science, horticulture, animal science and other fields. Like all designated university certificates, this program has gone through an approval process at the university level.

Curriculum

The Undergraduate Certificate in Plant Pests, Pathology and People requires a total of 12 credit hours, as follows:

Required courses (6 credit hours):

  • PB 222 Kingdom of Fungi (3 credit hours)
  • ENT 425 General Entomology (3 credit hours)

One of the following (3 credit hours):

  • ENT 201 Insects and People
  • ENT 203 Bees and Beekeeping
  • ENT 401 Honey Bee Biology and Management

One of the following (3 credit hours):

  • PP 315 Principles of Plant Pathology
  • PP 318 Forest Pathology

Prerequisites are required in some courses. Students should contact instructors before enrolling to determine eligibility.

No application for admission is required. Students must be in good academic standing to take courses at NC State University. Students pursuing university certificate programs are considered non-degree studies (NDS) students. Students desiring to earn the certificate should contact the certificate coordinator.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Plant Pests, Pathogens and People requires completion of 12 credit hours (four courses). Each course must be completed with a grade of C or better (grades of C- are not accepted). Students pursuing university certificate programs are considered non-degree studies (NDS) students for the purpose of university registration; NDS students may register for a maximum of 6 credit hours per semester. Thus, this certificate may be completed in as little as two semesters. The program must be completed within six (6) semesters, beginning with the initial course enrollment date.
